Outreach and Counselling Services

Women’s Place of South Niagara provides ongoing support through our free, confidential counselling services. All women who are experiencing or have experienced abuse in the past can access these services and you do not have to stay at one of our shelters to get help.

Women’s Place is committed to providing barrier-free access to our residential and outreach clients. If you require accommodation when accessing any of the services listed below, please let us know. Both of our shelters are wheelchair accessible.

Counselling

Areas of support provided through our counselling services are listed below. Each client is encouraged to identify their own unique goals and our counsellors will work with you to achieve them.

  • Creating a plan to keep you and your children safe
  • Developing a safe departure plan
  • Learning the signs of abuse
  • Self-esteem building
  • Life skills
  • Goal setting

All counselling takes place in a confidential, safe and non-judgmental environment.

Transitional Housing and Support Program

Your home should be the safest place in the world for you and your children. Domestic violence can destroy the safety of homes and leave families broken. If your home is affected by violence and you are looking to leave, Women’s Place can help.

  • Our Transitional Housing and Support Program (THSP) advocates assist women and their children in securing safe affordable housing.
  • Our THSP Advocates help ease the stress of moving by providing referrals for furniture/household goods, financial assistance and movers.
  • Our THSP Advocates can provide you with information about your rights as a tenant and offer emotional support through tribunal hearings/evictions.
  • Our THSP Advocates can also connect clients to services in the community that can help them to find employment.

Women’s Place can also help if you are planning to relocate out of the Niagara Region.

 Child and Youth Program

The effects of domestic violence can be felt throughout the whole family. Our Child and Youth Advocates work with mothers and support children who have witnessed or experienced trauma related to domestic violence. Services are available for mothers, as well as children ages 4 to 16. Our Child and Youth Advocates can also support youth ages 16 to 19.

Recreational activities are also provided for children to have fun and allow “kids to be kids”.

A play area and craft room are available for moms and children to relax and spend time together.

 Family Court Support Worker / Legal Advocate Program

When leaving an abusive relationship, a woman can face the challenge of navigating the legal system. Women’s Place Family Court Support Workers can help.

Our Family Court Support Workers / Legal Advocates provide information and support on leaving your abusive partner and can also help with safety planning.

Our Family Court Support Workers / Legal Advocates can help by:

  • Providing you with basic legal information and referrals, including referrals to lawyers
  • Supporting you through the process of applying for custody, access and child support
  • Providing you with support through court and other legal appointments (e.g., legal aid and lawyers’ meetings)
  • Helping you to understand/review legal documents and financial statements
  • Supporting you when working with police
  • Informing you about issues relating to violence against women and the law
